Jerome Robert O’Leary passed away on December 25, 2018. He was born March 30, 1927 at home in San Francisco, California to Cornelius and Hanna O’Leary. Jerry spent most of his life in San Francisco and Santa Rosa, California, but his career in the U.S. Army took him around the world. He was a decorated veteran of World War II, Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Jerry was a 1945 graduate of Loyola High School in San Francisco and the University of California - Berkeley in 1962, with a bachelor’s degree in zoology. He married the love of his life, Betty Jeanne Rutland, on November 3, 1950 in Reno, Nevada. Together, they had three sons: Ray, Jay and Shawn. Jeanne also had three beautiful daughters from a previous marriage: Peggy, Linda and Penny. Jerry, Jeanne and the family started their family life in the Potrero District in San Francisco in a home on Pennsylvania Avenue. St. Teresa Catholic Church and School served as the spiritual center for the family in the early years.

In 1962, Jerry returned to active duty as a Quartermaster officer in the U.S. Army after serving in the Army Reserves for 14 years. The family began their around-the-world travels in Stuttgart, Germany. The Army would move Jerry and the family eight times over the next 16 years including assignments at Fort Lee, Virginia; Da Nang, Vietnam; Taif, Saudi Arabia; Naval Amphibious Base - Coronado, CA; Tehran, Iran; and Fort Riley, Kansas. Colonel O’Leary retired from the U. S. Army at Fort Riley, Kansas with full honors in May 1979. He and Jeanne returned to their home in Santa Rosa to spend the rest of their lives together.

Jerry was preceded in death by all six of his siblings: Jack; May; Corky; Peggy; Frannie; and Josie; his wife, Jeanne; step-daughter, Penny; and grandson, Patrick. He is survived by Ray O’Leary and wife May of Quinton, VA; Jay O’Leary and wife Vicki of Petaluma, CA; Shawn O’Leary and wife Renee of Norman, OK; Peggy Jones and husband Skeeter of Forestville, CA; Linda Motta of Taylorsville, NC; five grandchildren: Connor, Casey, Brian, Colin and Luke; three great grandchildren: Kendrix, Bristol and Fitzgerald.

Jerry was a faithful, loving husband and father and his legacy will live on forever. A special memorial service is being planned by the family at Arlington Cemetery in Spring 2019. The family would like to thank Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and Kimi and his family for the special care given to Jerry in his final days.
